Guangzhou Baiyun Airport (CAN)

General information about Guangzhou airport

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport was built in 1932 and became one of the main transportation hubs in China. With the city rapid growth the more people needed to use the airport. So the old airport needed to be changed to a new one. Expansion of the first was impossible due to the dense development of the territories around the airport. The new airport opened on August 5, 2004 in 28 km from Guangzhou city center. The New Baiyun Airport replaced the 72-year-old one, which is closed now.

The new Baiyun Airport is five times bigger than the former airport. It was specially built as the largest transportation hub in South China. The investment for construction was 19.8 billion RMB. Modern Baiyun airport covers an area of 15 square kilometers and it's located in Huadu and Baiyun districts. The name of Baiyun Airport (白云) is translated from Chinese as “white cloud”. It’s also the name of the most famous mountain in Guangzhou.

Transportation between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 in Guangzhou

The new Baiyun airport has two terminals T1 and T2. There is a 24-hours free inter-terminal shuttle running between them (Airport Express). At rush hour 06: 00-08: 00 and 15: 00-18: 00 the bus leaves every 5 minutes, the rest of the time - every 10 minutes, at night from 23:00 to 06:00 - every 15 minutes.

It’s also possible to take subway to travel between the terminals. The trip is free. Line 3 connects T1 (Airport South Station) and T2 (Airport North Station). It operates daily from 6:00 to 23:45 and the train arrives every 5 minutes. The trip between the terminals takes 2 minutes.

Terminal 2 (T2) Guangzhou Airport

The official opening of Terminal 2 was in April 2018. This is a part of the master plan ($2.1 billion) to expand the airport and turn it into the main aviation center of southern China by 2025.

The new terminal T2 covers 880 700 square meters area. T2 is the domestic terminal for Chinese Southern Airlines, hence it accepts all Skyteam members airlines. It serves 40 million passengers a year which makes the total capacity of Baiyun Airport reach 80 million passengers a year.

The design of T2 is convenient and efficient in order to avoid unnecessary manoeuvres that could slow down the passengers. One more feature of T2 is that it is designed in a white cloud shape that emphasizes the belonging to the local heritage.

T2 is a 4-floor building with an area measuring over 658,000 square meters.

The terminal is equipped with an enhanced security system, 339 check-in desks, 120 fully automated check-in desks and 52 automatic baggage controllers. There are more than 360 shops and restaurants, Duty-free and the transit Airhotel from the Plaza Premium Group which debuted here in 2018. T2 is also equipped with play areas, several cinemas and a rooftop garden.

T2 is home to China Southern Airlines. In addition, most of SkyTeam member airlines also typically operate in Terminal 2.
