What to see in Macao during furniture shopping? The best tourist attractions

Macau is a famous Portuguese colony in Asia and Chinese special economic zone (P.S. most countries don’t need a visa here). Macau will surprise you with the amount of UNESCO heritage sites, architecture and culture contrasts and, obviously, the casinos.

Ruins of St. Paul's (Ruínas de São Paulo / 大三巴牌坊) in Macao

Ruins of St. Paul's

Ruins are the main architectural heritage of European architecture in Asia. The cathedral was located in the centre of the Macau Peninsula but burned down in 1835. Today, only the main facade with window openings, main entrance with a fragment of staircase remain from the once amazing temple.

Mount Fortress (Fortaleza do Monte / 大砲台) in Macao

Fortaleza do Monte was the main outpost of those times and held back the Dutch invasion of Macau in 1622. The walls of the fortress overlook the ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Guia Fortress (Fortaleza da Guia / 東望洋炮台) in Macao

Guia Fortress

Historically important military fortress located at the monastery of St. Lazarus. It, like many other fortifications of the city, built at the beginning of the 17th century and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The fort was built around the monastery in 1622 to defend against the Dutch invaders. The defence complex is located at the highest point of Macau, it was the main reason to build a signal beacon here. Guia Fortress was the first European-style lighthouse built on the coast of China.

St. Joseph's Seminary and Church (Igreja e Seminário de São José / 圣奥斯定教堂) in Macao

St. Joseph's Seminary and Church

St. Joseph's Seminary was built in 1728. This is the only temple in China made in the traditional Portuguese Baroque style. The Church of St. Joseph holds one of the most precious Macau relics – a fragment of St. Francis Xavier hand bone. Previously, the relic was stored in St. Paul’s Cathedral but was transferred to the church after its destruction.

Senate Square (Largo do Senado / 议事亭前地) in Macao

Senate Square named after the Senate building located in its central part and located in Macau historical centre. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, today it houses a museum and a city library.

Macau Museum (澳门博物馆)

Macau Museum

It is located in the Mountain Fortress, which was constructed by the Jesuits in the 17th century. Macau Museum was opened on April 18, 1998. Each of the three floors dedicated to a separate exhibition: the first floor to the history of Macau, religion and culture of two civilizations; the second to traditions and folk art; third-floor exhibits contemporary art.

Macau Fisherman’s Wharf (Doca dos Pescadores / 澳门渔人码头)

Macau Fisherman’s Wharf is a tourist centre and an area of nightclubs, bars and restaurants. Fisherman’s Wharf includes three main areas: Dynasty Wharf, East Meets West and Legend Wharf.

Macau Canidrome (澳门逸园赛狗会)

If you ever wished to watch the dog race, Macau is the place to be! There are about 730 dogs on the Macao Canidrome. The complex has a 400-meter running track for dogs, two stands, several private boxes and a VIP box. Beagle dogs (English greyhounds) are supplied for racing mainly from Australia.

Dog races on the Macau canopy are usually held in the evenings from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Taipa island (凼仔岛) in Macao

Taipa island

The island is 2.5 km south of the Macau Peninsula and connected with it by a bridge. Taipa has a completely different feeling. Tourists come here not only for historical monuments but ordinary building with unique architecture that the island has preserved.

The most famous monument – the Church of Our Lady of Carmel (Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Carmo) stands on the side of a small hill. There is a narrow footpath with a staircase going from the church to the coastline. The church surrounded by Mediterranean-style colonial mansions and green parks.

At the Wine Museum, you can learn about the process of making this ancient drink, as well as take part in wine tasting.

Working hours: 10:00 — 20:00. Tuesday off. Free entrance.

Macau Grand Prix Museum (澳门大奖赛博物馆)

Visitors of the Macau Grand Prix Museum can see more than twenty cars and motorbikes that participated in Formula-1 and piloted by Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard and Eduardo de Carvalho.

Seac Pai Van Park (石排湾郊野公园) in Macao

Pandas Pavilion is on the very southern part of the island. You can get to the park by taxi or bus number 25 or 26. The best time to visit is before 2 p.m., otherwise, you will find the pandas sleepy and lazy. In addition to pandas, there are also monkeys, lemurs, parrots and flamingos.

There are 12 galleries in the exhibition hall of the Macau Science Center: planet Earth, lifestyle, technology and science for children. All galleries are arranged in a spiral, so we suggest taking a lift to the very top and check all the galleries from top to the first floor.

The science centre works from Wednesday to Monday, 10:00 - 18:00, Tuesday – off.

Luis De Camoes Garden (白鸽巢公园) in Macao

Luis De Camoes Garden

Luis de Camoes was a famous Portuguese poet-writer in the 16th century. He lived in Macau for several years and worked as an officer in the colonial administration. The museum is located in a beautiful villa, known as Fundasao Oriente, it’s based in the garden named after Luis de Camoes. The villa was built in the 18th century, then leased to the East India Company, and in 1885 was acquired by the Macau government. Camoens Museum was organized here in the 20th century. A monument to Count Bernardino de Senna Fernandez was put in front of the museum as a sign of gratitude from the Chinese merchants to whom he provided protection and assistance.
